Anne Sofie Meldgaard (b. 1974)

Anne Sofie Meldgaard is a Danish visual artist. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she was raised in Denmark and now lives and works on the Danish island of Bornholm.

She studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1994 to 2000 and also attended the Royal Institute of Art (Kungliga Konsthögskolan) in Stockholm in 1998.

Meldgaard works primarily with painting and, in recent years, has increasingly focused on drawing. Her work features recurring motifs such as still lifes, everyday objects, flowers and figurative depictions of women.

She describes her artistic approach as intuitive and deeply rooted in sensory experience. Rather than relying on strict plans or preparatory sketches, she allows her works to emerge spontaneously through feeling and process. This is particularly evident in her drawings and oil paintings. In 2023, she presented a series that marked her first major exploration of works on paper.

Her work generally falls into three recurring themes: still lifes  often flowers in vases - everyday objects and situations, and women portrayed in a variety of settings and relationships.

This diversity gives her work a distinctive quality that is at once intimate and familiar, while also conveying a dreamlike, contemplative atmosphere rich in symbolic meaning.
