Martin Bigum is one of the most distinctive artists of his generation. Self-taught and endlessly curious, he works across painting, poetry, music and art communication. His work explores identity, belief and the images that shape contemporary life, combining humour, seriousness and a sharp sense of symbolism.
In the 1990s, Bigum became widely known for his iconic character ART - a hooded figure wandering through surreal and often unsettling landscapes. ART became his alter ego, a kind of modern-day pilgrim searching for meaning in a world of media, unlikely heroes and fragmented stories. The series marked his breakthrough and established him as a leading voice in contemporary Danish art.
At Nyborg Strand, you can experience a selection of works from The Ocean series, a later chapter in Bigum's artistic journey. These paintings are filled with intense colours, where the depths and surface of the sea become a metaphor for the human mind. Bold colours, confident brushstrokes and powerful compositions draw the viewer straight into the energy of each work.
