Mie Olise Kjærgaard (b. 1974)

Mie Olise Kjærgaard is a Danish artist who lives and works in both Copenhagen and New York. She studied at several art and architecture schools, including Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where she completed her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 2008. In addition to painting, she creates sculptural works and installations, exploring themes of space, structure, and storytelling.

Kjærgaard's paintings are often large in scale and characterised by expressive brushstrokes and a distinctive colour palette. Bold, vibrant colours immediately draw the viewer in and give her works a strong visual presence.

Her art frequently centres on female figures portrayed in motion and action rather than as passive subjects. The women in her paintings are sweeping, dancing, riding, or engaging with one another in play and shared experiences, conveying a sense of energy, confidence, and freedom.

Her recent work explores themes of femininity, freedom, transformation, and dreams, often referencing women's history, feminism, and the evolving role of women in society.
